After Vascular Lesion Laser Treatment
You have had laser treatment of your vascular lesions. They are now discolored, and a crust may form, lasting several days. Please read the following carefully. This information will help you know what to expect and how to care for the treated area.
What to Expect
The treated area may swell somewhat. This is caused by the heat from the lasers energy and represents inflammation, not infection. It is a normal and expected part of the healing process.
The purpura (red/purple color) you see in some treated areas will last 5 to 10 days, although it sometimes lasts a bit longer before it fades away. When it fades, you may still be able to see the treated vessels. The body gradually continues the fading process for several weeks, so that final results will not be seen until 6 to 8 weeks after your treatment.
Care of Treated Area
Apply a thin coat of antibiotic ointment to the treated area once or twice a day for 7 days, or until the surface looks healed.
Pat dry after showering, but avoid rubbing or picking the treated area.
Take acetaminophen or a pain reliever which contains no aspirin or ibuprofen for any discomfort.
You can help relieve swelling by applying an ice pack wrapped in a soft cloth. Leave this on the treated area 10 minutes each hour for 4 hours.
Precautions
Do not rub, scratch, or pick the area.
Makeup is permitted, but be gentle when removing it.
Swimming is permitted once all crusts have fallen off (5-10 days).
Use clothing or a full-strength (SPF 15 or higher), waterproof sunscreen to protect the treated area while outdoors.
